MAY 31 - BACK HOME

It is an early rise today, as our flights are scheduled before 10 am. Jocelyne's flight is a bit earlier than mine, but we get to the airport together. We take the metro again, it is so fast and comfortable. At this time, it is not crowded either. My flight is a bit delayed (30 mn), so I have plenty of time ahead. It leaves at 9.45 am and 3 hours later, I am in Geneva, leaving sunny Greece for rainy Switzerland/France. It was a wonderful holiday, with so many beautiful sights. And food was excellent, we always had great dishes, even if simple ones. *********************************************************************************** Nous nous levons tôt aujourd'hui, c'est le vol du retour. Nous prenons à nouveau le métro pour rejoindre l'aéroport, c'est rapide et confortable. Mon vol est un peu retardé, il est à 9 h 45. Celui de Jocelyne est parti avant. 3 heures plus tard, je me retrouve sous la pluie de Genève. Bye Bye, la Grèce ensoleillée. Ce voyage a été magnifique, nous en avons pris plein les yeux. MAY 30 - ATHENS

We are taking it easy this morning. Our flight back to Athens is scheduled at 12 am. The hotel manager takes us there at 10.30. The airport is really close from Fira, it just takes about 15 mn by car. The flight (Aegean Airlines) is on time and 30 minutes later, we land at Athens airport. We take the metro to get into the city, it is fast, very convenient, very clean and modern. This new metro line connecting the airport to the city centre was built for the 2004 Olympic Games. Before that, one had to take either bus or taxi to get into town, which could take ages. Our hotel is called Hotel Alma and is situated right near the Omonia metro station. From the blue line (airport line), we change to the red line.

Our room is Ok, fairly small, but Athens being a capital city, it is difficult to find a nice and cheap room. We pay 48 € for it, which is OK. The only thing we dislike there is that the hotel manager yells at his staff in front of the clients. Poor staff!

We start walking and head first to the Parliament Square to look at the evzones, the guards in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with their cute outfits. I especially like the shoes. . . Then, we head to the Acropolis, passsing first the Plaka area, very touristy, with many shops and restaurants. We walk all around the Acropolis until we can find the proper entrance. Under the scorching heat, it is quite an ordeal. Moreover, Athens is a polluted city and we can also hear the traffic noise in the distance. When we are on the hill, we can see the whole city and we can notice there are not that many green areas.

We enter the Acropolis site and we are very disappointed. The entrance fee is 12 € and all monuments being under repair, it is just scaffoldings everywhere. We can't admire the buildings the way they really are. .

We walk back to the hotel, stopping at the main market. .

After having dinner in a restaurant next to our hotel, we just fall into bed, as we have to wake up early tomorrow morning. Athens is definitely not a city where one would like to spend several days.

Matinée très tranquille, notre avion pour Athènes est à 12 h. La responsable de l'hôtel nous emmène à l'aéroport et nous y sommes très vite, les distances sont courtes à Santorin.

Notre avion (Aegean Airlines) est à l'heure et 30 minutes plus tard, nous atterissons à Athènes.

Nous prenons le métro pour rejoindre le centre ville. La ligne bleue a été prolongée jusqu'à l'aéroport en 2004, pour les JO. Avant, c'était bus ou taxi avec bouchons interminables à la clé. Là, il nous faut environ 40 mn pour arriver à l'hôtel. Celui-ci (Hotel Alma) est situé sur la place Omonia, donc très central. La chambre est petite, mais pour 48 € au centre d'Athènes, il ne faut pas être trop exigeant. Le patron n'arrête pas de crier après son staff, tout cela devant les clients, pour un oui ou pour un non. Je les plains.

Nous commencons notre tour de ville par le Parlement et ses evzones qui gardent la tombe du Soldat Inconnu. Ces gardes ont des chaussures à pompons. Ils sont trop mignons.

. . . Ensuite direction l'Acropole en traversant le quartier de Plaka, très touristique, mais sympa, car en partie zone piétonne. Il nous faut un peu de temps pour trouver l'entrée de l'Acropole. Prix: 12 €. Ca fait un peu râler, car presque tout le site est recouvert d'échafaudages. Par contre, la vue sur la ville est sympa. Le Mont Lycabette au loin, pas beaucoup de verdure, des immeubles à perte de vue. Athènes est une ville très bruyante et polluée.

. . En contrebas, on aperçoit le nouveau musée archéologique. Nous rentrons à l'hôtel en passant par le marché central.

Après un dîner dans un restau tout à côté de l'hôtel, nosu nous écroulons.Athènes est une ville épuisante. Il y fait très chaud et il y a toujours du bruit. Ce n'est pas la ville où l'on aurait envie de passer un weekend.

SANTORINI - MAY 29

I am taking a bus to the perched village of Pyrgos, while Jocelyne is having a mini trip to the volcano (Nea Kameni).

Pyrgos is set up a hill and offers great views over the whole island of Santorini, or at least, a good part of it.. The village is picturesque and there are quite a few beautiful doors. . . Then I decide to walk all the way down to the seaside resort of Kamari, about 5 kms from Pyrgos. I pass the huge Agios Haralambos church, at the village of Exo Gonia. .

Then, further down, I can see quite a nice scenery of vineyards, white villages, the Mount Profitis Ilias in the background. . . The beach at Kamari is made of black sand, looks more like gravel actually. It is very busy and there is one restaurant after the other, as well as one souvenir shop after the other. I am not staying very long in Kamari, there is not that much to do there. Back to Fira by bus, a last stroll along the cliffs and in the city.

Then we have our last dinner in our favourite restaurant, the Taverna El Greco, close to our hotel. It is very friendly, quite inexpensive and of very good quality. The waiters are very nice to us. I truly enjoy my grilled squids. ************************************************** Jocelyne va faire une excursion vers le volcan (Nea Kameni) pendant que je prends un bus pour le village perché de Pyrgos. . Le village offre une belle panoplie de portes bleues, bien sûr. . Les vues sur une grande partie de l'île sont très belles.

. . . Je descends à pied vers la station balnéaire de Kamari, proche de l'aéroport. .

Le paysage est superbe, il y a beaucoup de vignobles et des maisons troglodytes. . . Kamari n'est pas d'un grand intérêt, il y a une plage de sable noir, je dirais plutôt du gravier.... Les restos et les magasins de souvenirs se succèdent.... Je ne reste pas longtemps à Kamari, je reprends un bus pour Fira.

En fin de journée, nous assistons à la remontée des mules, quel spectacle affligeant. Ces pauvres animaux ne sont pas vraiment maltraités, mais ce n'est vraiment pas une vie, transporter à longueur de journée des touristes au gabarit parfois bien imposant. Quelle tristesse. Un dernier petit tour le long de la falaise, pour admirer encore une fois toute cette beauté. ..
