FLIGHT TO ATHENS - ANDROS MAY 17

After a smooth flight from Geneva to Athens, the plane lands on time at the Athens airport situated in Spata, outside the city. I get my backpack very quickly and I am soon outside the airport where Jocelyne is waiting for me, as she arrived one hour earlier. It is nice to see her again after our India trip. The KTEL bus to the port of Rafina is scheduled at 16.45, so we still have time ahead and can chat quietly in a shady corner. It is hot in Athens... The bus takes 30 minutes to reach Rafina, through small villages, it often stops to pick up or drop passengers, but we still have 15 minutes to buy our ferry ticket. The ferry (CYCLADES FAST FERRIES - 13 €) leaves at 17.30 and two hours later, we arrive at Gavrio, on Andros island, the closest island to Rafina port. I thought it was much nicer to spend the night in Andros instead of Rafina, that has no charm at all. It is nice to be on the ferry, it is like being on a cruise... Andros port (Gavrio) is small and there are mainly greek tourists there. It is a bit busy as there is a boat race here in the port. Our accommodation (Ostria Studios) is nice and very close to the port, 35 € for a double room with kitchenette, but we won’t make use of the kitchen, as we have our dinner in the port, there is a big choice of restaurants. Our first night in Greece, wonderful! Andros is the northern most island of the Cyclades and the second largest in size after the island of Naxos. It has a total population of about 10.000 inhabitants (2001 census). We won't stay on Naxos island though, may be another time. It was just a way to avoid Athens or Rafina for our first night in the Cyclades.

Vol Genève-Athènes sans problèmes, arrivée à l’heure, formalités ultra rapides à la sortie, même mon sac à dos arrive en premier sur le tapis roulant ! Je rejoins Jocelyne qui est arrivée une heure avant moi et nous avons du temps avant de prendre le bus pour Rafina. Il est à 16.45 et je suis sortie de l’aéroport à 16 h… Le bus met bien 30 mn pour rejoindre Rafina, en passant par de petits villages et en s’arrêtant sans cesse pour déposer ou prendre des passagers, mais à 17 h 15, nous sommes bien à Rafina et pouvons prendre le bateau de 17 h 30 vers l’île d’Andros. Elle est à 2 h de ferry de Rafina. Nous arrivons au port de Gavrio où j’ai réservé à Ostria Studios, une chambre double avec kitchenette pour 35 €. De plus, c’est à 200 m du port. Andros est surtout visitée par les Grecs, il y a un peu d’animation car c’est le week-end et il y a des courses de bateaux. Notre première nuit dans les Cyclades, le rêve !

Andros est la deuxième plus grande île des Cyclades et la plus septentrionale. Elle a environ 10.000 habitants (recensement 2001). Nous n’y resterons pas, elle reste juste une étape qui permet d’éviter Athènes ou Rafina, sans charme.
